Mrs Reiter 3a’s Skype
in the classroom moment
We have had an amazing year using Skype to connect to people who have helped us learn about the Iditarod. Alaska and the race are so far away from our home in Baltimore and we have learned so much about the race and the state that we never would have been able to do any other way.
We Skyped with Squid Acres Kennel and were magically and instantly transported into their kennel where we got to see their gear and dogs up close and in person as we learned about what it takes to compete in the race. We Skyped with Denali National Park and learned about the five adaptations that sled dogs have that allow them to survive in the harsh Arctic environment.
We Skyped several times with a school in Wisconsin whom we did a shared reading of the novel Stone Fox with. It was so cool to team teach a novel via Skype! The kids were always so excited to Skype with their "other class" to see what they were thinking.
But - the highlight of our year will be Skyping together while I am on the Iditarod Trail following the race as the 2014 Iditarod Teacher on the Trail! I'll be able to bring the race to life for my class (and hopefully other classes around the world) in real time by Skyping from the trail! Skype has given us the chance to really experience the people and stories from the Trail!
