About this Skype lesson
From 1861–1865 Virginia stood at the center of a military and social revolution. How we define freedom, liberty, patriot, and nation today is directly related to the diverse experiences of the individuals who participated in the Civil War. This program encourages students to consider how an historical event can influence and address the questions of today. What was lost? What was gained? What issues were decided and which were left uncertain?
Classes can watch the 5-minute introductory video, Why War?, and then independently explore the An American Turning Point online exhibition (http://www.vahistorical.org/civilwar/main.htm). Following the virtual tour of the exhibition, classes will have the opportunity to Skype with a curator of the exhibition for a 30-minute Q&A session.
